We come and look at it
We measure the area, check the levels between the threshold and the footway, look at where water currently goes, and open a small trial hole to see what the ground is. It takes under an hour.
You get a written, itemised quote
Groundwork, drainage, paving and any brickwork priced separately, with the specification stated. Then you compare it with whoever else you are speaking to, at your own pace.

A good part of what we do at the quote stage is telling people what their options actually are, including when the honest answer is that the job is smaller than they feared.

About quotes and getting started
Do you charge for a quote?
No, and there is no obligation attached to it. We come out, measure the driveway, check the levels and open a small trial hole so we know what the ground is. Then you get a written quote.
We do not use a salesman, we do not do same-day discounts, and we do not follow up repeatedly. If you decide against it, or against us, that is a perfectly reasonable outcome.
Do I need to be there when you visit?
It helps for the first visit, mainly so you can tell us how you actually use the frontage. Where the second car goes, which way you reverse out, whether the bins live at the side. Those things change a layout more than anything on a drawing.
If that is difficult, we can look at it without you and follow up with questions.
How long is a quote valid for?
We hold prices for 60 days. Beyond that, material costs move and we would rather re-issue than quietly adjust it later.
Take your time within that. A driveway is a considerable purchase and comparing three quotes properly is the sensible thing to do.
How far ahead are you booking?
It varies with the season, and we will tell you honestly when you enquire rather than promising a start date we cannot hold. Spring and early autumn are usually the busiest.
Groundwork in a wet spell is worth avoiding where the schedule allows, because a clay subgrade that gets saturated and then trafficked is a poor foundation.
What happens if you find something unexpected once you start?
You hear about it the day we find it, with a price, before we go any further. Old foundations, a buried slab, soft ground, an inspection chamber nobody knew about. It happens on frontages that have been altered over a century.
What we will not do is build over it quietly, or present you with it at the end.
